Staff Appreciation Week!

Van Arsdale Teacher Appreciation week is May 20-24.  This is a time to teach our children about the need for appreciation and gratitude to those who help us and mold us. These are such important life lessons.   It would be greatly  appreciated if your child with your help could participate in our weekly activities for the Van Arsdale staff. Everyday we are going to help grow and prepare our teachers for summer –these are ideas that can be simple and fun while at the same time, bringing a smile to someone’s face and throughout the summer months.  Please take a moment to make this week special for the individuals who make our school such a special place for our children to learn and grow.

Please see the attached schedule for the week!

Rocky’s Enrichment, Spring 2013

Sponsored by the PTSA

Rocky Enrichment Program – Spring 2013

Van Arsdale’s before and after School Enrichment Program centers around the continuing

pursuit of excellenceatn our school. This program works to provide quality academic, physical,

and social enrichment activities to Van Arsdale Elementary students to enhance their preparation for a successful future. And also sheer wicked pleasure. Lots of pleasure.

To register and pay for Enrichment classes, please complete and return the attached registration and waiver form with a check payable to Van Arsdale PTSA. Return to your student(s)’ teacher or to the school office. Or register/pay online at http://vanarsdaleelementary.digitalpta.com/rockys-enrichment-brochures/

Continuing chess                                                    Your move!

1-6. This class continues the Fall program. New students attending should already know how to play, know opening goals and some tactics. This class will include a brief review of opening, middlegame and endgame goals and tactical thinking techniques. Focus will continue with strategic middlegame themes such as attacking the king, it will include an introduction to pawn structure and also gambits.  Each one-hour session includes a discussion topic and then supervised play. Students need not bring chess sets, but may bring a healthy snack.

Young Rembrandts- Elementary drawing

Think your kid’s done Young Rembrandts? The curriculum’s new every time! K-6. Young Rembrandts is an award-winning art enrichment program that has given the power of drawing to thousands of young artists across the United States. In each week’s NEW, exciting (and kid-tested!) lesson, we use a step by step method that assures every student is a creative success. As children learn and use technical drawing skills, they discover that all complex objects can be broken down into familiar shapes; then use problem solving skills, innovation, and imagination to put them all together into eye-popping masterpieces!

Bricks4Kidz

K-3 class back by popular demand: This is a hands-on class where students will design and build machines, catapults, pyramids, dragster cars, buildings, inventions, transportation, and other gadgets out of LEGO® bricks.  While exploring engineering, architecture and physics, students will develop problem solving and critical thinking skills.

Discovery Dance: Dance of the Superheroes

K-6. This 7 week session includes Ballet, Tap, Jazz and a Show during the last half hour on the last day of the session, our SHOW DAY! Details about the performance will be sent home two weeks before the show. Dance class is held at the school, in the GYM. No dancer will be turned away!

Beginning/continuing combined Spanish is Fun!

1-6. New teacher! Spanish is, hands-down, the most useful language in the United States next to English. Children that are exposed to another language at an early age have more opportunity to learn faster and have better understanding of the language. This class will motivate students using enjoyable lessons, so children want to continue learning. We help children build the Spanish language. They will grow in self-confidence as they learn to speak and understand a foreign language.

                                 Introductory Tae Kwon Do

This K-6 program is designed for children as a basic, fundamental introductory class to Tae Kwon Do.

1) Lessons of the week: your child will learn such concepts as SELF DISCIPLINE, COURTESY and RESPECT, and how to apply these at home and school.

2) Our Achievement Program: At the end of each session, the student can prepare for the next ranking through attaining stripes for such activities as a) helping at home b) doing homework c) leadership activities and d) learning important Tae Kwon Do lessons.

3) Our Teaching System: our experience with martial arts and kids allows the students to become much more interested in learning while maintaining a winning attitude in everything that they do.

4) Our Professional Instructors: we specialize in motivating children to be their absolute best, all in a friendly and positive atmosphere.

Intro to Machine Sewing with Jenn Berger

3-6. Jenn has been teaching sewing at Westwoods for three years, and loves teaching kids how to sew. The first class will be getting familiar with the sewing machine, learning vocabulary, and practicing sewing straight lines on both paper and fabric. The rest of the classes the kids will get to decide what projects we make. We will make at least 2 more projects based on time allowed. Included in the cost are all materials for each project, and the use of Jenn’s sewing machines, as well as complete instruction.

SpaceTime: Rockin’ Rockets

2-6. With Rockin’ Rockets kids will get to do just about everything there is to do with rockets… short of riding one into space! This theme takes them on a wild ride into the fascinating science of rocketry and space exploration while letting them go hands-on to build and launch safe, non-combustible rockets. Activities include learning about the science and history of rocketry, crafting their own SpaceTime Galactic Gliders, and launching lots of different kinds of rockets.

We the Beats: Mathemusics Number Songs

The kids will compose, perform, record and produce their own songs about numbers and math functions.  Each child will choose a grade and level appropriate concept for his or her individual song.  Their challenge will be to write a song that will help others to understand the concept.   Our goal will be to produce a CD album of fun and completely original educational songs.  Watch out School House Rock!

Young Rembrandts: Cartooning

K-6. New projects and principles every time!

PlayWell Engineering FUNdamentals with LEGO

3-5. Let your imagination run wild with over 100,000 pieces of LEGO! Apply real-world concepts in physics, engineering, and architecture through engineer-designed projects such as arch-bridges, skyscrapers, motorized cars, and Battletrack! Design and build as never before, and explore your craziest ideas in a supportive environment

Overtime Athletics Sports Spectacular Variety Program

K-2. Do you love to play sports? Then you’ll love Sports Spectacular! Each week we’ll play a different sport or game including: basketball, soccer, flag football, kickball, capture the flag, tag games and MORE! Get moving with games like Bump and Bite, Knights and Dragons, the Numbers Game, and Safe Base. We’ll work on teamwork, sportsmanship and fitness, all while having FUN.

Overtime Athletics Lax-tastic Lacrosse

Come play the fastest game on two feet! Our experienced coaches will teach you the skills you need to play lacrosse; cradling, passing and catching, scooping, shooting and defense. We’ll even provide the sticks! Capture the Lax Ball, Ground Ballhogger and Dodger are some of our favorite games to play. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to learn this fast-paced sport. Sign up today!

Run with Rocky Training Club with Rosa Kougl

Join the fun as you train to run in Van Arsdale’s annual Run with Rocky Race. The running club will improve student fitness by developing aerobic endurance, raising self-esteem, and creating awareness about the importance of keeping themselves fit, strong, and healthy, all while having fun. Students should bring their own water bottles and running shoes.

Sticky Fingers Cooking Class

Mix and Measure and Knife Skills, Oh My! Let your child release their inner chef!  Sticky Fingers Cooking offers young chefs the chance to explore exciting tastes (all seasonal and as local as possible!), master culinary skills (that they can put to use in family kitchens!) and nourish their bodies and minds. Our After School Enrichment classes each feature a healthy recipe, emphasize safety and skill building, and encourage environmental awareness in an engaging way. Progressively, children will build upon skills learned from previous classes and by the end if the session, they will have acquired a repertoire of talent to help you at home in the kitchen! We provide all of the tools, ingredients and instruction needed to cook up a fun, delicious and healthy (sshh!) snack each week. Our on-line recipe collection is included as well for each chef for future family cooking fun!

Intro to Mandarin Language and Chinese Culture

K-6. There are more than a dozen languages spoken in China, but Mandarin is the one you’re likely to hear on the street and in recent martial arts movies. Mandarin is a language where pitch conveys meaning: some people talk about singing, rather than speaking, Mandarin! (It’s easier than it sounds.) In this (very) introductory class students will learn to hear and speak common phrases, and gain an appreciation for some basics of Chinese geography, history, and culture. The class is oral/aural only: no writing. Families who have registered for other Enrichment classes may register students for this class free: one free family registration per other registration.

Ways to Help Sandy Hook

PTA families,

As I forward this message from our National PTA President, Betsy Landers, my heart aches with sorrow for the Newtown community and the senseless violence they have endured. My prayers for comfort continue. Our PTA community around the country wants to support and help Sandy Hook. See Betsy’s message below for ways to help. I, also, want to include a teddy bear project initiated by a PTA in Colorado Springs. Please visitwww.PTAkuddles4kids.com for information on how to support their goal to send 800 teddy bears.

Thank you all for your support to this grieving community,
Karen Hobson
President
Colorado PTA

December 17, 2012

It is with heavy hearts and the deepest sympathy that we express our condolences to the families and communities affected by the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School. We have watched with profound sadness, pained that school violence has again claimed so many beloved students and educators. As you read these words, the families in Newtown, Connecticut are enduring unspeakable heartache and loss. Together let us pray that they will receive the comfort they so desperately need.

National PTA and the Connecticut PTSA pledge our unwavering support to the Newtown community. In the past few days, we have met with PTA leaders of all of the schools in Newtown, including the Sandy Hook PTA, and community leaders who have requested our help in supporting the families. For those of us who are looking to be of assistance in the aftermath, we share the following projects in need of your support:

Welcome Students to a Winter Wonderland

When school resumes for Sandy Hook, it will be in a new building. Parent-volunteers are working to ensure that the students are welcomed back by a winter wonderland with the entire school decorated with as many unique snowflakes as possible. We encourage senders to be as creative as possible, remembering that no two snowflakes are alike. Please make and send snowflakes by January 12, 2013 to the Connecticut PTSA address at the end of this email.

Donating and Organizing Fundraisers for Sandy Hook Elementary School

Donations will be accepted indefinitely to the Connecticut PTSA “Sandy Hook Fund” to provide ongoing support to the community. Please send checks to the Connecticut PTSA address listed at the end of this email. Group fundraising projects may include walk-a-thons, spirits days, pajama days, etc., which may be scheduled at your convenience.

For student-run coin drives, please submit all donations by February 14, 2012.

The Newtown community has requested only monetary donations at this time. For service or product donation inquiries, please contact newtownboe@gmail.com. To contact Sandy Hook PTA, please email sandyhook@ctpta.org.

National PTA Advocacy

Toward the end of the week, we will be prepared to share with you how best to advocate for school safety at the state and federal levels in response to this tragedy. As we said on Friday, National PTA prioritizes the protection of children in all schools and believes it is fundamental to learning. We have several position statements and resolutions related to school violence and child safety, which we will package and share widely very soon. Rest assured, we fully plan to engage our powerful network of nearly 5 million dedicated members to make a difference on this issue.

Resources

Many parents may feel at a loss about how to approach the subject of school violence with their children. For information on helping your child cope, discussing issues of violence and hate, and keeping your school safe, please visit our website atPTA.org/schoolviolence.

Thank you for your generous support and dedication to the children and families of Newtown, Connecticut.

Warm regards,
Betsy and Jim

Barnes & Noble Bookfair

Please join us on Wednesday, December 12th from 4:00 to 9:00pm at the Westminster Barnes & Noble store (93rd and Sheridan) for a night of holiday fun with the Van Arsdale community. Rocky’s Enrichment
Thank you to Mary Ann Dimand for working so tirelessly over the last year to provide great enrichment programs to Van Arsdale. With Mary Ann’s retirement from the enrichment program, we need another volunteer to help Lila Schow coordinate the program. If you’d be interested please contact Lana at lana77@comcast.net or Lila atlilabudo1@gmail.com. We need your help to keep this fantastic program available to our students!
Thanks for your support!
